Karen Renna - Well let’s see if this time my comment works. Last one I typed did not fly. So patterns are essential to building ones life. Early morning is generally when I say my prayers setting up the focus of being of service to my self and other s for the day. My prayers open me up sprititually, mentally and creatively to go forward in the best way possible. Night time is when I try to reflect on what was successful and what was not. Then I try to reevaluate so that I can change what did not work. This applies to family friends and students and my own art work.

Karen Renna - I too love the early morning. That is when I say my prayers. They are my key to unlocking my better side both spritiually and mentally. the creative of course comes right after that. Other wise I am not as patterned or organized as I would like to be. Each day though I am more practiced at striving to do it and I find that I have been much more productive this year than other years. I just finished two small paintings that I began last year. I am not any closer to getting my studio set up. This has been a harsh winter on many levels but I have not stopped the planning or the organizing for the studio. So patterns and habits are essential as long as we continue to assess their validity to our current life situations.

admin - Nina, it is amazing that this phenomena happens just like this on a daily basis, and it never gets old ! Any ideas about organizing your life , especially in a new environmwnt? Any discoveries, lately?

admin - Hi, Fil,

Thank you for your question!
The artwork displayed in this post by Williams Kentridge is a 1998 charcoal self-portrait from the MoMa sow in 2010. The video I mentioned can be found at http://www.moma.org/explore/multimedia/videos/95 and is called “The artist responds to a question about whether art c”an change the world.” He remarks, “I believe that in the indeterminacy of drawing- the contingent way that images arrive in the work-lies some kind of model of how we live our lives. The activity of drawing is a way of trying to understand who we are and how we operate in the world.”
I love the way he articulates his thoughts about drawing, don’t you? And I do agree with his statement that the action of drawing helps us to understand who we are and how we live!

Fil - what is the name of the William Kentridge example provided

chironarts - It’s So amazing how spouses can just walk in with the right amount of influence! Bravo. So interesting how my perception changes as I change.

Thank you.

bethvw - Leah,
I’m glad you liked the suggestions. I have been simply drawing and painting more and not at the computer as much.
I look forward checking out your Creative everyday blog . I like the energy of it. I even used your shadow idea the other day with 4ht graders!
They loved it!

bethvw - Great hearing form you! Looking forward to hearing more about what you are up to creatively, as well.

Anne Tabone Nardone - Great to see your work. You are as amazing as I remember.

leah - great tips!! and i love that wallace stevens quote!

Nina - Thank you, Beth. :)

bethvw - @Anna As you articulate, preconceived notions are certainly challenging to deal with, because it is difficult to disengage from them. Perhaps they seem like a kind of lifesaver for us, so we don’t have to risk too much.

In reality, though, expectations can crowd the truth out of creative marks. The marks then, are no longer searching, they have stopped growing. When i see that it is a reminder to me to begin again to trust my hand working with my heart in the now moment. Thank you for the affirmation!

bethvw - @Hybrid J Art and life require similar handling, as you expressed so eloquently.
The medium used in the art of life is the day, the place and the people we meet.We need to use all of the skills of art, such as observing, imaging, abstracting, and ending with transforming and synthesizing. I know both art and life work out best when I am honest with myself and others and when I dare to proceed with courage and an open mind. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Anna - Hi Beth – What a timely post, tying so well in what I am pondering right now. I fully agree with what you write: get physical – definitely, set a time limit – yes, I set a limit of 20 min today!. What I find important too, is to be void of preconceived notions of the result and just let the brush/hand lead!

Hybrid J - What a great post to remind us not only about art but also about life! Just how many times we try to impress, both ourselves and others, that we forget the reason why we are doing something.

Thank you for writing up such wonderful post. :)
