Carole - David Brooks, columnist for the New York Times, spelled out something during an interview with Charlie Rose which sounded so familiar to me, yet, was giving it a new frame to understand. For years, I practiced the process of intensely working on a painting, and then step away to create some space, often, letting it sit over night. It is our unconscious that gets to work when we relax after an intense, conscious effort. David Brooks said: “You have to feed the unconscious”. It is this wonderful interplay between conscious effort and the unconscious that creates art. Sounds old, yet new.

Evidence of things not seen

What I did rediscover, as I reflected, is that I must create! It is as necessary to me as eating and sleeping. It is my way of sharing what is not not seen: of digging away at what is not understood; of researching using visual tools and gut level intuition. Why is this so important to me?…
