As I work in my studio, I have begun to list all of the ideas that waft through my mind when I am just waking in the morning, walking, participating in a conversation, and reflecting…

Karen Renna - You and I spoke yesterday about Ms Lieu’s work and i was intrigued as you know, especially by her use of all the values. I would love to see some of her work up close, see how the light responds to it and through it. the funny thing is that today in class with my students I was looking at Escher’s and Homer’s woodcuts and wood engravings and of course Whistler’s rich subtle textural use of grays and mid range values. It is finding the beauty in the values between the extremes that excites me right now. It is like finding the worlds in between moments of time, like whispers of dreams or memories that i am trying to hold onto.

claralieu - Dear Beth,
Thanks for your kind words regarding my blog, I very much appreciate it. I like Twylla Tharp’s method for collecting idea; it’s simple, direct, and very manageable at the same time. Thanks for sharing!

Best,
Clara Lieu

Karen Renna - Interesting question- have I had my visual orientation challenged today-it seems every day offers that opportunity. In thinking about display spaces for my art, i have been hearkening back to the cave painters and how the whole community participated in some level on the projects. All of us would have had an essential role to play in the preparation, creation and celebration of that art. Nothing exclusive there. I had this idea about creating temporary art work for my lawn and asking neighbors and local children to respond and play with the art and allow for the layering of our experiences and times and ages to peak through the play. Just at thought. I must confess the thought of that big print fest with all people creating and responding looked WONDERFUL- that is what sparked the thought.
